Academic Enhancement Program
In 2007, Simley High School initiated an academic enhancement
after-school program for students in grades 9-12. The goal of the
program was to prepare traditionally disadvantaged students for college
success. Many of these students would be the first in their families to
attend a post-secondary institution.
During that first year
(2007-2008), the program operated for 90 minutes after school each day.
Over the course of the year, 12 students participated in the program.
year two (2008-2009), the program expanded to include a before-school
option. During the school year, 35 students took advantage of the
opportunity to improve their academic skills in preparation for college.
the summer of 2009, Simley introduced a two-week intensive college
preparation workshop that focused on the college search, career
exploration, online learning skills and study strategies.
three (2009-2010) was a year of further expansion. Forty-seven students
participated during the school-year program, attending either before or
after school and sometimes both. In 2010, 11 students attended the
The fourth year of the program has started out
strong with an enrollment of 49 students. Additional requests for
participation are coming in daily.
Of the 26 total graduates from the program to date, 22 are enrolled in a post-secondary institution.
