What is Title 1?
Title 1 is a federally funded program that provides extra academic support to students in the areas of reading and/or math. At Pine Bend we follow the “Read Well By Third Grade” initiative (as part of the World’s Best Workforce literacy plan that our district is following.) Therefore, we target children in grades kindergarten, first and second for reading support.
How Do Students Qualify?
Reading benchmark assessments are given to all the students at Pine Bend three times a year. Based on results and teacher input students may qualify for additional help. Groups are formed and students receive small group instruction during the regular school day. These groups are fluid and end with the completion of each school year. We currently implement a research based intervention program developed at the University of Minnesota called PRESS.
Parents are notified with a letter and asked to sign a compact agreeing to work with their child/children.
Teachers and students sign these as well. Together we work to help children succeed. Title 1 teachers/paraprofessionals meet with parents during fall and winter conferences to connect and refer to these compacts.

What Can I do to Help?
Pine Bend Elementary School values parent involvement. The Title 1 program requires that our district and school have Parent Involvement Plans. These plans are reviewed yearly with Title 1 staff and parents at an annual Title 1 Parent Meeting.
